What the research supports

No efficacy trial of supplemental digestive enzymes in healthy dogs or cats was found in the PubMed searches run for the research file. The one related trial, 12 beagles given Aspergillus niger enzymes at 200 mg/kg, reported no change in nutrient or energy digestibility (PMID 32121315).

What the label discloses

The 1800PetMeds label gives per 1/4 rounded teaspoon (1 g): alpha-amylase 2,320 SKBU, lipase 210 LU, cellulase 75 CMCU, protease 22,100 PU and Bacillus coagulans 100 million CFU. The Amazon ingredient list adds calcium carbonate, maltodextrin, fructooligosaccharides, papaya and ginger. The current naturvet.com page shows a reformulated jar with a different serving, so the physical label should be read. The label doses per cup of food at every feeding rather than by body weight; the cost per day shown assumes one cup of food a day for cats and dogs under 25 lb, rising to four cups over 75 lb.

Worth knowing

For dogs and cats over six weeks; intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. In the Amazon reviews read, one owner of a diabetic cat objected to the maltodextrin.
