SuppleGut
Privacy policy
The short version. The quiz runs inside your own browser and your match is calculated there. When a quiz is started we keep an anonymous record of it under a random session id: the answers you tapped, the products you were shown, and any buy button you click on that page. That record has no name, email, account, cookie or identifier attached. If you ask for a check-in, your email address is stored separately from that record and used only to send two check-in emails; your check-in answers attach to the session id, not to your name. The sentence you can type into the homepage box is read once and not kept. We set no cookies and carry no advertising or social media tracking pixels. We combine the anonymous records into aggregate figures, which we may publish or share; we never sell or share anything about one person.
Who we are
SuppleGut ("SuppleGut", "we", "us") operates the website at supplegut.com. We are based in the United States and the site is intended for visitors in the United States. You can reach us at hello@supplegut.com about anything in this policy.
Your quiz answers
We keep one anonymous copy, under a random id. It is worth being specific about what that means, and what it does not.
- The quiz questions, the scoring logic and the entire product catalog are delivered to your browser as part of the page. Your answers are processed on your own device and your match is calculated there.
- As you go, an anonymous record is written to our own database. When you start the quiz your browser makes up a random session id. Against that id we store the answers you tap (values from the quiz’s own option lists), which question you reached, whether a safety check stopped the quiz, how long it took, the products you were matched with, and any buy button you click on your results page. It does not contain anything you typed — not the homepage sentence, not the notes box, not the medication box — and not an email address, a name, a cookie or any identifier that could link it to you or to another visit. The section on check-ins below says what it is for and who sees it.
- When the quiz finishes, the same anonymous answers also go to our analytics service, described under “How we measure the site”, so that quiz outcomes can be read alongside page views.
- They are saved in your own browser, on your own device, so that your results survive a refresh. We use session storage, which belongs to the single browser tab you are using: it is not readable by any other site and your browser deletes it as soon as you close that tab. It exists so that reloading your results page, or pressing the back button to return to it, does not lose the match you just worked through the whole quiz for. Closing the tab clears it; so does using “Start over”.
- Because the record is anonymous, nobody can find yours — including us — unless you asked for a check-in, in which case the email address you gave is the one link, and deleting it (below) breaks that link for good.
- We record which products a completed quiz landed on and which ones were clicked for an unglamorous reason: without knowing how often a product was shown, the number of times it was clicked tells us nothing. It is how we find out that a product we keep recommending is one nobody actually wants.
- We do not use cookies, fingerprinting, or any identifier that could follow you to another website, or link two of your visits together.
- There is no account system, and nothing on the site is held back until you give an email address. There are three optional email fields: after the quiz has shown you your match, you can ask us to email you the three product names, or ask for a check-in; and on the fiber pages you can ask for our one-page fiber guide, which puts you on a short email list described below.
The “Tell us what’s up” box. If you type a sentence into the box on the homepage instead of tapping the quiz tiles, that sentence goes to our server and on to Anthropic, whose Claude model turns it into quiz answers, and the answers come straight back to your browser. We do not store it, log it or link it to you; nobody reads it; and under Anthropic’s API terms it is not used to train their models. If that reading service is unavailable, the box still works: your browser matches the words to the quiz itself. Either way, only the resulting answers — option values, never the sentence — are kept in the anonymous record above.
Because your quiz answers describe symptoms, they may qualify as sensitive or consumer health data under some state laws. We keep them only in the anonymous form described here, with nothing that identifies you. The one thing that can be joined to them is a check-in email address you choose to give, and that address is kept in a separate table, used for nothing but the two check-in emails, and deleted on request.
Quiz data and check-ins
This is the part of the policy that explains what the anonymous quiz record is for, what the optional check-in adds, and what we do with all of it.
- Quiz answers and results are collected anonymously under a random session id, as described above. Nothing in that record names you.
- Check-ins are optional. After your results you can give an email address and ask for a check-in. If you do, we email you twice — about two weeks and about six weeks after your quiz — to ask whether what you tried helped. That is the whole series: no newsletter, no marketing, nothing else. Every check-in email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and the emails carry the standard header that lets mail apps unsubscribe for you.
- Check-in responses are linked to that session id, not to a name. Tapping an answer in the email, and anything you fill in on the check-in page afterwards, is stored against the same random id as the quiz. The check-in asks the same 0–10 question the quiz asked, which product you tried, how consistently, and whether anything else changed; every question after the first is optional.
- The symptom tracker is part of the same check-in. Asking for a check-in also opens a private tracker page, reached only through the random link in your email. Anything you log there — a 0–10 score for the day, which symptoms were around, an optional note — is stored against the same random session id as your quiz, never against your name, and you can change or delete any day from the page itself.
- Your email address is stored separately, in its own table, with the random id and a random link token. It is used only to send the two check-in emails, and it is never sold, shared or added to any list. Our email provider, Resend, delivers the messages and keeps its own record of messages sent, as described under the fiber guide below.
- We combine the anonymous answers and outcomes into aggregate statistics — for example, what share of people matched to a probiotic reported improvement at six weeks, or the most common reason people did not buy — and we may publish those figures on this site. Our methodology page explains how they are calculated and filtered.
- We may share or sell aggregate, anonymized insights of that kind with third parties, including supplement brands and researchers. Those are counts, averages and percentages across many people.
- We never sell or share individual-level data. No record of one person’s answers, outcomes or email address is ever passed to anyone.
- Aggregate insights, and any payment for them, never influence quiz scoring or product placement. The matching rules are the same for every product and are not changed for a brand; see how we match and our affiliate disclosure.
- SuppleGut Pet works the same way, without the check-ins. The pet quiz at /pet/ records the answers you tap (species, age band, weight band, what is going on, the safety answers, format and budget), the matches shown and any buy-button click under the same kind of random session id, with nothing that names you or your animal. There is no email opt-in and no check-in email for pet quizzes.
- Retention and deletion. Unsubscribing stops the emails at once, and the address is removed from our table within 30 days of that; in any case an address is removed within 90 days of the second check-in being sent. The anonymous quiz and check-in records are kept indefinitely for the aggregate figures, because they identify no one. To have your address deleted sooner, or your check-in answers deleted along with it, use the unsubscribe link or reply to any check-in email and say so; we will confirm when it is done.
If you ask us to email your match
This is one of three places on the site where you can give us anything about yourself, and it is optional. If you leave it alone, nothing in this section happens.
What we send to our email provider: the address you typed, and the names of the three products you were matched to with links to their pages on this site. That is the whole message.
What we do not send: any answer you gave. Your symptoms, your medication answers, what you have already tried and what you prefer are not in the message and are not implied by it. The anonymous record of your answers described above shares nothing with this request, so this address is never joined to it. The message names three products. It does not say why they were chosen or what you told us.
Unless you tick the fiber-guide box, we send that message once, when you ask for it. There is no second email, no list to leave, and nothing to unsubscribe from, because you were never subscribed to anything. We do not keep your address. The message is handed to Resend, the service that delivers our email, and it appears in their record of messages sent, which they keep on their own schedule. If you would like that record removed, write to us and we will ask them to delete it.
If you ask for the fiber guide
The fiber-guide box on our fiber guides and comparisons, and the tick-box under “Save your match”, put your address on a short email list. Here is exactly what that means.
What you get: the one-page fiber guide straight away, then two short follow-up emails, three and ten days later, about getting the dose right and whether to keep going. Both are scheduled at the moment you sign up. That is the whole series; nothing else is sent unless you ask for something again.
What we store: your email address and the page you signed up from, held as a contact at Resend, the service that delivers our email. Nothing about your quiz, your symptoms or your health is attached to it. If you signed up from the results page, the request carried the three product names and nothing else, exactly as described above.
Leaving: every email in the series has an unsubscribe link, and the emails carry the standard header that lets mail apps unsubscribe with one click. Unsubscribing marks your address as unsubscribed at Resend and cancels anything still scheduled. To have the address deleted rather than marked, email hello@supplegut.com and we will remove it.
The guide emails link to our own product pages and guides, never straight to a shop.
Because the message contains only product names, it does not describe your symptoms or your health, and it is not the sensitive health information discussed above.
If you use SuppleGut through an AI assistant
SuppleGut offers a connector that lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT look up our guides, comparisons and product research. When an assistant uses it, our server receives the search words or the page name the assistant sends, and returns the matching text from this site.
We do not store those requests or log what they contain. The connector has no account, no cookie and no identifier, and it does not ask for or need any information about you or your health. What you type to the assistant itself is handled by the company that runs that assistant, under its own privacy policy.
How we measure the site
We need to know whether this site actually helps anyone, so we count how it is used. We do that with Umami, a privacy-focused analytics service, and we serve it from our own domain rather than loading it from theirs.
- No cookies, and no storage of its own. We have tested this directly: the measurement script writes no cookies, nothing to local storage and nothing to session storage. The session storage described above is written by the quiz itself, on your device, and the measurement script cannot read it.
- No cross-site tracking and no profile. It does not follow you to other websites and does not build a profile of you.
- What is counted: the page address and title, the page that referred you, approximate country, browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language — plus a small set of named actions: a quiz being started, which question it reached or was abandoned at, a safety stop happening, a quiz finishing and the product it landed on, and a product or research link being clicked.
- What we see: totals. The dashboard shows counts, not people. We cannot single you out, replay your visit, or connect two visits to each other.
- IP addresses. As with any request your browser makes to any website, the request arrives carrying an IP address, and the service uses it to work out an approximate country. It is not shown to us and we do not store it. How the provider handles it is described in the Umami privacy policy.
- Opting out. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we load nothing and count nothing. Blocking the request is also entirely effective; nothing on this site depends on it.
Information collected automatically by others
Three things happen at the infrastructure level that are outside our direct control, and you should know about all three.
- Hosting. The site is served by Vercel, which processes standard server request logs, including IP address, user agent and requested URL, for security and delivery purposes. See the Vercel privacy policy.
- Fonts. The typefaces are stored on our own server and load with the page. No font request goes to Google, Fontshare or any other company.
- Domain and DNS. Our registrar and DNS provider process request metadata in the ordinary course of routing traffic.
We do not receive personal information from any of these providers, and we do not combine anything from them with the anonymous quiz record.
Nothing in the measurement described above is joined to any of this, and none of it is joined to your answers.
Affiliate links and what happens when you click out
Some product links on this site are affiliate links; the affiliate disclosure page sets out what that means. When you click one, you leave SuppleGut and arrive on the retailer's own website. At that point the retailer and its affiliate network may set cookies or other identifiers on their site in order to attribute the sale.
That tracking is theirs, on their domain, governed by their privacy policy and not by this one. It records that a visitor arrived from SuppleGut. It does not carry your quiz answers.
Our commercial relationships never influence which product you are matched with or the order results appear in. See our affiliate disclosure for the full explanation.
How we use and share information
The personal information we hold is limited to an email address, if you asked for your match, the fiber guide or a check-in. We use it only to send what you asked for. We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising, and we have no mechanism to do so.
The anonymous quiz and check-in records, and our measurement data, are used in aggregate: counts, averages and percentages across many people. We may publish those figures and may share or sell them to third parties, including supplement brands and researchers, as set out under Quiz data and check-ins. Nothing at the level of one person is ever shared.
If we are ever legally compelled to produce records, the records that exist are the anonymous quiz and check-in tables, the email table described above, and our hosting provider’s server logs.
Retention
The anonymous quiz and check-in records are kept indefinitely, because they identify no one and the aggregate figures depend on them. A check-in email address is removed within 30 days of unsubscribing and in any case within 90 days of the second check-in being sent. If you ask us to email your match, your address passes to our email provider so that one message can be delivered, and appears in their record of sent messages, which they retain on their own schedule. If you ask for the fiber guide, your address is held as a contact at that provider until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
Your rights
Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have rights to access, correct, delete and port their personal information, to opt out of sale and targeted advertising, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. Washington and Nevada residents have additional rights covering consumer health data.
We honor all of these. If you never gave us an email address, a request will be answered by telling you we hold nothing that identifies you, because we do not: the quiz record is anonymous and cannot be looked up by person. If you joined the fiber-guide list or asked for a check-in, we will delete the address on request, and with it the link between you and any check-in answers. If you would like that confirmed in writing, email hello@supplegut.com.
There is no "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link on this site because we do not sell or share personal information and have no mechanism to do so. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals are respected: if your browser sends either one, our measurement script is never loaded and nothing is counted.
Children
This site is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and the site should not be used by minors to make decisions about supplements. Anyone under 18 should speak to a parent, guardian or clinician.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. The quiz and check-in tables hold anonymous records under random ids, and the email table is separate, holds nothing but addresses and random link tokens, and is reachable only by our own server; neither is readable from the public internet. The most meaningful security measure we can offer is that there is no record anywhere that pairs a name with a set of symptoms.
Changes
If we add anything that collects information — an advertising pixel, an email signup, or a change to how we measure the site — we will update this policy before that feature goes live, not afterward. That is how the measurement described above was handled: this policy was rewritten in the same release that introduced it. Material changes will be noted on this page.
