Daily gut routine
BodyBio Butyrate with Calcium & Magnesium
A mineral-buffered butyrate capsule coated in MCT fat, meant to reach the colon rather than feed bacteria.
- Format
- Capsule, once a day
- Type
- Postbiotic
- Cost
- $0.74 a day
- Customer rating
- 4.3 out of 5 from 2,800 ratings from Amazon
What customers consistently report
- Less bloating and more regular bowel movements within a few weeks of daily use
- Being gentler than sodium butyrate versions for people who found those harsh
- A simple, short ingredient list compared with multi-strain probiotic blends
Those are the themes that recur across the reviews. Reasonable review confidence — 4.3 from roughly 2,800 ratings on the 100-capsule Amazon listing, with the exact count drifting by a few hundred depending on when it is checked. No independent rating platform outside Amazon carries a meaningful sample.
Why it might work
Butyrate is a main fuel for colonocytes, the cells lining the colon, and this capsule supplies the metabolite directly rather than asking gut bacteria to make it. As a postbiotic, it contains no live organisms, so survival or colonization is not part of the delivery problem. The calcium and magnesium butyrate is wrapped in an MCT fat coating, intended to help it reach the colon rather than release high in the digestive tract. That target matters: butyrate can be absorbed before it gets there. The entry does not report a study showing this MCT coating reaches the colon, and its 1,200 mg daily amount is four times the dose in the cited trial, which used a different sodium-butyrate microencapsulation. The short, fully disclosed ingredient list is a practical positive, but it cannot resolve that delivery mismatch. Interest in butyrate cannot prove outcomes for a delivery format that differs from what the relevant studies tested.
What the research supports
Real trial evidence exists on the ingredient, but it does not map cleanly onto this product. A placebo-controlled trial in 66 IBS patients gave 150 mg of microencapsulated sodium butyrate twice a day (300 mg total) for 12 weeks and found less pain during defecation and less urgency, but no significant difference in overall abdominal pain or flatulence versus placebo. This product delivers 1,200 mg a day — four times that dose — as calcium/magnesium butyrate wrapped in an MCT fat coating rather than the shellac-based microencapsulation used in the trial. The two delivery methods rely on different triggers to survive stomach acid, and no study was found testing this specific coating for colon delivery or clinical outcome. Treat the underlying ingredient as studied, not this capsule.
What the label discloses
The ingredient list is short and disclosed in full: butyric acid, calcium and magnesium hydroxide, MCT oil, and a plant-cellulose capsule. BodyBio’s own product page states the product is always third-party tested, and its Amazon listing calls it cGMP certified, but an independent brand audit found no public certificate of analysis and no named accredited lab behind that claim — a real gap between the marketing claim and what can actually be verified. Free from the eight major allergens and gluten.
Who this tends to suit
We match this product to people reporting bloating, gas, general abdominal discomfort and irregular bowel habits. It fits someone whose priority is day-to-day comfort, resetting after a course of antibiotics or an upset or a steady daily routine. Whether it is the best fit for you depends on the rest of your answers — what you have already tried, what format you will take, and anything that has to be ruled out.
Where it may not fit
The label supports vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and no added sweeteners. We flag this product for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding or taking prescription medication, and the quiz removes it rather than recommending it in those cases. That is a caution about who should be deciding, not a claim about the product. A capsule only works if you will take it once a day, every day.
Side effects and what to be aware of
A minority of reviewers dislike the capsule’s fermented smell, and value-for-money opinions are mixed once shipping and subscription pricing are compared against the 250-count bottle. This is a postbiotic, not a probiotic — it delivers no live organisms, so it will not help if what you actually need is bacterial repopulation.
