Does Return Healthy Double Butyrate work? Calcium butyrate and tributyrin with printed amounts, and the salt trials they are compared with

Quick answer

Does Double Butyrate work? No trial of Double Butyrate was found, nor of calcium butyrate with tributyrin or of ButyraGen. The nearest evidence is butyrate salt trials: 300 mg a day of sodium butyrate eased pain during defecation in 66 adults with IBS, 1.5 g a day reduced pain, diarrhea and bloating in 52 adults with diabetes, and 500 mg of calcium butyrate gave success in 73% against 3.8% of 51 children. The label supplies about 1.85 g of butyrate-equivalent a day. On Amazon it holds 4.1 from 45 ratings.

Double Butyrate supplies about 1,850 mg of butyrate-equivalent a day at the label dose and has no trial; the butyrate salt trials used 300 mg a day of sodium butyrate in 66 adults with IBS, 1,500 mg in 52 adults with diabetes and IBS type symptoms, and 500 mg of calcium butyrate in 51 children, while ProButyrate lists 600 to 1,200 mg of a complex rather than acid.

Return Healthy Double Butyrate is a capsule that pairs two forms of butyrate, the short-chain fatty acid gut bacteria make from fiber, with three probiotic organisms, shilajit and aloe. Most butyrate supplements use one form; this one prints 2,000 mg of calcium butyrate and 200 mg of tributyrin on the same panel.

What Double Butyrate is, and what it is not

The serving is four capsules, and a 120-capsule bottle holds 30 servings. Per serving the panel prints calcium butyrate 2,000 mg (stated to supply 1,680 mg of butyrate), tributyrin 200 mg (as ButyraGen), shilajit extract 80 mg (20% fulvic acid), aloe vera 200:1 extract 80 mg, Bacillus coagulans 2.5 billion CFU, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG 2.5 billion CFU and Saccharomyces boulardii 0.4 billion CFU. CFU are counted at manufacture. No proprietary blend is declared.

The calcium line is lower than the salt weight implies. Pure calcium butyrate is about 81% butyrate by weight, so 2,000 mg would hold roughly 1,630 mg of butyrate and about 374 mg of calcium (our arithmetic); the panel prints 1,680 mg and 310 mg, and does not say why. Of the three organisms, only L. rhamnosus GG carries a strain code; B. coagulans and S. boulardii are printed as species.

What butyrate is, and why the form matters

Butyrate is a fuel for colon cells. Taken by mouth as a free acid it has a strong odor and is absorbed high in the gut, which is why the supplement forms exist. Calcium butyrate is a salt, like sodium butyrate with calcium in place of sodium. Tributyrin is three butyric acid units attached to glycerol, a fat the brand says releases butyrate further along the digestive tract; the brand calls the two forms complementary. By our arithmetic 200 mg of tributyrin holds about 175 mg of butyric acid, so a day at the label dose supplies about 1.85 g of butyrate-equivalent.

We found no release, dissolution or absorption data for either form in this product, and nothing on what ButyraGen is or who makes it. A 2026 review says outcomes may depend on delivery technology, release profile and dosage (Caban et al., Digestive Diseases and Sciences, 2026); for this product the first two are not posted.

The trial of the product itself

There is none. PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov return no trial of Double Butyrate, of calcium butyrate combined with tributyrin, or of ButyraGen. The evidence is for butyrate salts and mixtures in other forms, populations and doses.

The evidence for butyrate salts

In 66 adults with IBS already on drug therapy, microencapsulated sodium butyrate (300 mg a day) or placebo was added for 12 weeks. Pain during defecation fell by four weeks and urgency and bowel habit improved by 12, while abdominal pain and overall severity did not change significantly (Banasiewicz et al., Colorectal Disease, 2013). In 52 adults with type 2 diabetes who met Rome IV criteria for IBS, 1.5 g a day of microencapsulated sodium butyrate lowered abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloating over 12 weeks; the trial was registered retrospectively (Panufnik et al., Scientific Reports, 2026).

The one trial of calcium butyrate was in 51 children with IBS. At 500 mg a day for eight weeks, 73% reached treatment success against 3.8% on placebo (Cristofori et al., Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 2025). A pediatric trial in inflammatory bowel disease, gave 150 mg of sodium butyrate twice a day for 12 weeks and found no difference in remission or disease activity (Pietrzak et al., Nutrients, 2022). The ProButyrate guide sets out more of these trials.

Set against them, four capsules supply about 1.85 g of butyrate-equivalent. That is roughly seven to eight times the butyrate in the 300 mg sodium butyrate trials (about 240 mg), about one and a half times the 1.5 g diabetes trial (about 1,190 mg), and about four and a half times the pediatric calcium butyrate dose (about 410 mg). No dose-response trial of oral butyrate was found, so a larger dose is not shown to work better. The one human crossover found tested a butyrate and hexanoate triglyceride, not plain tributyrin, in 12 men with overweight; a medium dose raised plasma butyrate and moved no secondary outcome (van Deuren et al., Frontiers in Nutrition, 2022).

The probiotics, strain by strain

A 2026 strain-specific meta-analysis of IBS trials (32 articles, 10 strains) found efficacy for L. rhamnosus GG and conflicting results for the S. boulardii strain CNCM I-745 (Maslennikov et al., Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2026). The positive B. coagulans trial used the named strain Unique IS2, 2 billion CFU in 136 adults for eight weeks (Madempudi et al., Scientific Reports, 2019). An S. boulardii trial in 67 people with diarrhea-predominant or mixed IBS found a quality-of-life gain of 15.4% against 7.0%, with no better result on individual symptoms (Choi et al., Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, 2011). With no strain printed for those two, the results may not apply. The CFU guide covers how counts are read.

How Double Butyrate is described

The Amazon listing text calls it “this sodium butyrate supplement”; the panel lists calcium butyrate and tributyrin and no sodium butyrate. The listing bullets also say it will help alleviate bloating and IBS, reduce fatigue and brain fog, and improve cognitive function in children and adults; the panel and bottle make none of those claims, and carry the standard not-intended-to-treat-or-cure statement.

The brand cites independent third-party testing; no laboratory, certificate of analysis or seal is named or posted.

How to take it

The directions read: take 2 capsules 2 times per day, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner, with or without food. That is the full four-capsule serving, split in two; there is no lower label dose, though two reviewers say they take half. No trial sets a dose or duration for this formula; the salt trials ran 8 to 12 weeks.

Side effects and who should not take it

The bottle prints one caution: anyone pregnant or lactating should consult a healthcare practitioner first. Reviewers on Amazon and the brand site report heartburn, diarrhea and gas after starting, and a few call the capsules large. The allergen statement lists gluten, peanut, almond, hazelnut, milk, egg, soy and crustacean as absent; it does not cover fish, sesame or other tree nuts.

What the reviews say

On Amazon it holds 4.1 from 45 ratings: 68% five-star, 10% four-star, 7% three-star, none two-star and 15% one-star. Of the eight top reviews we read, four are marked as free product through Amazon’s Vine program. The brand page shows a Judge.me widget at 4.70 from 46 reviews, but 44 of those are labeled as collected from another provider, only 2 are marked verified buyers, and most predate the current product page. We found no Trustpilot profile, and Walmart’s page could not be read.

The recurring praise is less bloating and gas and no taste or smell. The recurring complaints are four capsules a day, the price, digestive side effects and no noticeable change.

Common questions

Does Return Healthy Double Butyrate work?

No trial of this formula, of calcium butyrate with tributyrin, or of ButyraGen was found. Butyrate salts have mixed results: sodium butyrate eased some symptoms in adults with IBS, calcium butyrate did in a children’s IBS trial, and a pediatric inflammatory bowel disease trial found no difference. On Amazon it holds 4.1 from 45 ratings.

What is in Double Butyrate, and how much butyrate does it have?

Four capsules hold 2,000 mg of calcium butyrate (stated as 1,680 mg of butyrate), 200 mg of tributyrin as ButyraGen, 80 mg each of shilajit and aloe extract, and three probiotics: B. coagulans and L. rhamnosus GG at 2.5 billion CFU each and S. boulardii at 0.4 billion CFU. By our arithmetic that is about 1.85 g of butyrate-equivalent a day.

How many Double Butyrate capsules should you take a day?

The directions say 2 capsules 2 times per day, with or without food, or as a healthcare practitioner directs. That is the four-capsule serving the panel is written for, and a bottle lasts 30 days. No lower label dose is printed.

Is Double Butyrate sodium butyrate or calcium butyrate?

The panel lists calcium butyrate and tributyrin and no sodium butyrate. The Amazon listing text calls it a sodium butyrate supplement, so the listing and the bottle disagree. Most IBS trials used microencapsulated sodium butyrate; the only calcium butyrate trial was in children at 500 mg a day.

Double Butyrate vs ProButyrate or BodyBio: what is the difference?

Double Butyrate prints a weight for each of its two butyrate forms, 1,680 mg of butyrate from calcium butyrate plus 200 mg of tributyrin a day. Tesseract ProButyrate prints a 300 mg complex per capsule without the butyric acid amount. No study compares them.

Does Double Butyrate cause side effects, and can you return it?

The bottle’s only warning is to consult a practitioner if pregnant or lactating. Some reviewers report heartburn, diarrhea or gas after starting. The brand takes back unopened bottles within 60 days, with shipping not refunded, and gives store credit for opened ones.

How much does Double Butyrate cost per day?

A 120-capsule bottle is $70.00 on the brand site and $68.95 on Amazon, which is $2.33 and $2.30 a day at four capsules. Amazon Subscribe & Save brings it to $1.84, or $1.72 with the 25% savings tier.
