Why it might work
Butyrate is the main fuel of the cells lining the colon and a signal that tightens the barrier between them. Supplying it in a capsule skips the bacteria that normally make it from fiber. The catch is delivery: butyrate is absorbed high in the gut unless something carries it to the colon, and the MCT oil in this capsule has not been shown to do that. The sodium form matches the trial salt; the dose is twice the trial’s total per capsule.
What the research supports
Ingredient-level evidence from one trial. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 66 IBS patients gave 150 mg of microencapsulated sodium butyrate twice a day for 12 weeks and found less pain during defecation and less urgency after 12 weeks, with no significant difference in overall abdominal pain, bloating or flatulence. That product used a shellac coating to reach the colon; this capsule delivers 600 mg per capsule as sodium butyrate in MCT oil, a different dose and a different delivery method, and has no trial of its own.
What the label discloses
The ingredients are sodium butyrate, hypromellose capsule, medium-chain triglycerides and purified water. BodyBio states the product is third-party tested; no certificate or lab name appears on the listing. Free from gluten and dairy and suitable for vegans.
Who this tends to suit
We match this product to people reporting general abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, urgency and irregular bowel habits. It fits someone whose priority is day-to-day comfort, resetting after a course of antibiotics or an upset or pain and tenderness. Whether it is the best fit for you depends on the rest of your answers — what you have already tried, what format you will take, and anything that has to be ruled out.
Where it may not fit
The label supports vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, no added sweeteners and minimal ingredient list. We flag this product for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding or taking prescription medication, and the quiz removes it rather than recommending it in those cases. That is a caution about who should be deciding, not a claim about the product. A capsule only works if you will take it as often as the label directs.
Side effects and what to be aware of
The smell is strong and several reviewers report nausea or loose stools, particularly when starting on two capsules. Each capsule carries about 125 mg of sodium, which matters on a restricted-salt diet. This is not a probiotic and delivers no live organisms.
