What customers consistently report

Those are the themes that recur across the reviews. Moderate review confidence — the 4.4 from 1,152 Amazon ratings is independent and shared across the listing’s variants, the brand’s own 5.0 is typed with no count, and the brand’s Trustpilot profile (3.8 from 2,085) covers the whole company.

Why it might work

Senna, cascara and rhubarb contain anthraquinones that stimulate the colon wall to contract, and magnesium oxide draws water into the bowel; psyllium, slippery elm and marshmallow add bulk and mucilage, and aloe, ginger and licorice are traditional digestive herbs. The probiotic is a live culture meant to add to the gut’s own bacteria. The label does not say how much of each stimulant is active, whether the aloe is the laxative latex, or whether the cultures survive to the end of shelf life. Because the directions are daily with no stated stopping point and the formula combines two kinds of laxative in every dose, this page is for browsing and the quiz does not recommend it.

What the research supports

No trial of this formula was found. The label carries senna at 50 mg of a 20:1 extract, about 1 g of leaf by its own ratio, in the range of a 28-day trial in which 1.0 g of senna produced a 69% response against 12% on placebo; cascara and rhubarb are anthraquinone herbs in the same class, with fewer trials. Psyllium is 0.5 g of extract against more than 10 g in the fiber trials, and the probiotic is a 10 mg blend of species with no strains named. No trial of slippery elm or marshmallow in constipation was found.

What the label discloses

Most amounts are printed, but rhubarb sits inside a 200 mg proprietary blend and the probiotic is given as 10 mg with no CFU on the panel. The aloe is a leaf extract with no statement on gel, latex or aloin, and the brand page calls the capsules vegan while the label lists bovine gelatin capsules. The brand states third-party testing and a GMP facility but names no laboratory, and the label has no day limit although it holds senna and cascara.

Where it may not fit

We hold no dietary claims on file for this product, so we do not assume any. We flag this product for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding or taking prescription medication, which is a caution about who should be deciding, not a claim about the product. A capsule only works if you will take it once a day, every day.

Side effects and what to be aware of

Amazon’s summary notes mixed opinions about the pill size and that some find it expensive. On Trustpilot, which covers the whole brand, 19% of 2,085 reviews are one star and many describe subscriptions that continued after canceling, orders not received and unanswered support. The label says pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18 and people with a known medical condition should consult a physician, the brand page adds people on medication, and the label carries senna and cascara with no day limit.

Common questions

Does Clean Nutra GI Defend work?

No trial of this formula was found. Amazon shows 4.4 from 1,152 ratings (74% five-star, 5% one-star), and the summary of reviews says it helps constipation and heartburn. It contains senna, cascara and rhubarb, stimulant laxative herbs, and magnesium oxide, so a bowel movement is the expected effect of the dose.

Does GI Defend contain senna or cascara?

Yes. Three capsules contain senna leaf extract 50 mg, cascara sagrada bark extract 300 mg and rhubarb extract inside a 200 mg blend, plus aloe vera leaf extract 100 mg and magnesium oxide 200 mg. The brand page calls the capsules gentle for daily use and does not list senna or rhubarb in its headings.

How much does GI Defend cost, and is there a subscription?

A 90-capsule bottle is $29.95 on Amazon ($1.00 a day at three capsules) and $39.99 on the brand site ($1.33), or $29.99 on the brand’s 25% Subscribe & Save. Multi-bottle packs on the brand site are $0.80 to $0.89 a day.

Is it safe to take every day, and what are the side effects?

The label says to take 3 capsules once a day with a meal and gives no day limit, and says pregnant or nursing mothers, anyone under 18 and anyone with a medical condition should consult a physician. Senna and cascara can cause cramping and diarrhea, a review of 43 publications found no convincing evidence that long-term stimulant laxatives cause colon cancer, and some Trustpilot reviewers report bloating and heartburn.

Can you cancel a Clean Nutra subscription?

The brand states a 30-day money-back guarantee and cancel-anytime subscriptions. Its Trustpilot profile (claimed, 3.8 from 2,085 reviews, 19% one-star) includes many reports of charges after canceling, unwanted subscriptions, and orders not received. Amazon purchases follow Amazon’s returns terms.
