Why it might work
NCFM is a well-characterized acidophilus strain that survives stomach acid, adheres to the gut lining briefly and produces lactic acid and bacteriocins while it passes through; Bi-07 is a Bifidobacterium chosen for the same properties in the colon. The bloating trial suggests the pair reduces gas-related distension rather than pain or transit, which fits a product aimed at bloating more than at bowel habit.
What the research supports
Strain-level evidence at a higher dose. A 2011 double-blind trial randomized 60 adults with functional bowel disorders to L. acidophilus NCFM plus B. lactis Bi-07, 100 billion CFU of each twice a day, or placebo for eight weeks; bloating severity fell more in the probiotic group, while pain and bowel habit did not differ. A 2016 trial of NCFM alone in 391 people with IBS found the lower of two doses, 1 billion CFU a day, reduced pain compared with placebo, and the higher dose did not. NCFM is one of the most studied single strains, with trials in lactose digestion and antibiotic-associated diarrhea as well. This capsule, at 15 billion CFU total, sits between the two trial doses and has no trial of its own.
What the label discloses
The label lists a proprietary blend of 55 mg providing 15 billion CFU of L. acidophilus NCFM and B. lactis Bi-07, with microcrystalline cellulose and a vegetable capsule. Metagenics states non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free and vegan status, GMP manufacturing and third-party testing; the strains are licensed from IFF (formerly Danisco). The split between the two strains is not stated.
Who this tends to suit
We match this product to people reporting bloating, general abdominal discomfort and gas. It fits someone whose priority is day-to-day comfort or a steady daily routine. Whether it is the best fit for you depends on the rest of your answers — what you have already tried, what format you will take, and anything that has to be ruled out.
Where it may not fit
The label supports vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, no added sweeteners and minimal ingredient list. We flag this product for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding or taking prescription medication, and the quiz removes it rather than recommending it in those cases. That is a caution about who should be deciding, not a claim about the product. A capsule only works if you will take it once a day, every day.
Side effects and what to be aware of
At about 83 cents a day it costs more than most single-strain capsules, and reviewers split on whether that is justified. The capsule delivers 15 billion CFU a day, well below the 200 billion twice-daily dose used in the bloating trial, so the trial result was obtained at a much higher dose than this product gives. Metagenics suggests refrigeration for best results even though it is sold as shelf-stable.
