Those are the themes that recur across the reviews. Low review confidence — Amazon shows 4.6 from 6,998 ratings, but its ingredient text describes a different 20 billion formula, the brand’s own widget shows 4.77 from 1,001 reviews that are all flagged as incentivized and date from 2018 to 2022, and there are no Trustpilot or Better Business Bureau reviews.
Why it might work
The probiotic blend is a mix of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species plus one spore-forming Bacillus, meant to add live bacteria to the gut, and the delayed-release capsule is intended to carry them past stomach acid. Xylooligosaccharide and chicory inulin are prebiotic fibers that gut bacteria, especially bifidobacteria, ferment into short-chain fatty acids and gas. Taken together the product is called a synbiotic. The label does not let you check which strains these species are, how many organisms remain alive at the end of shelf life, or how the 1,000 mg is split between the two fibers.
What the research supports
No trial of this product was found. The evidence is for the ingredient class: a 49-patient placebo-controlled trial of a six-species Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium mixture improved IBS symptoms (68% against 37.5% relieved over four weeks), but it used named strains and this label names species only. A 2023 meta-analysis of 82 IBS trials rated the certainty of benefit for combination probiotics on bloating as very low. The label’s whole prebiotic blend is 1,000 mg, below the 1.4 to 8 g of xylooligosaccharide used in the human trials found.
What the label discloses
Sixteen species are listed without strain designations or per-organism counts, so the 50 billion CFU is a single blend figure measured at the time of manufacturing, not at expiry. The label and brand page say third-party tested and GMP, but no laboratory or certificate is shown. Amazon’s own ingredient text still describes an older 20 billion, two-organism formula, so the label and listing do not fully agree.
Who this tends to suit
We match this product to people reporting bloating and general abdominal discomfort. It fits someone whose priority is day-to-day comfort or a steady daily routine. Whether it is the best fit for you depends on the rest of your answers — what you have already tried, what format you will take, and anything that has to be ruled out.
Where it may not fit
The label supports gluten-free and vegan. We flag this product for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding or taking prescription medication, and the quiz removes it rather than recommending it in those cases. That is a caution about who should be deciding, not a claim about the product. A capsule only works if you will take it once a day, every day.
Side effects and what to be aware of
The brand’s own review score is built from older, incentivized reviews of mixed products, and Amazon’s review text was not readable. The small group of low-rated brand-widget reviews mention no change, a capsule that is hard to swallow, or a rebate coupon that failed. The Amazon listing advises a doctor first if pregnant, nursing, taking medication or with a medical condition.
Common questions
Does MAV Nutrition Prebiotics and Probiotics work?
No trial of this product was found. Its probiotic blend lists 16 species with no strain codes and a 50 billion CFU figure measured at manufacture. Trials of similar multi-species Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium mixtures in people with IBS found symptom relief in small studies, but a 2023 meta-analysis of 82 trials rated the certainty of benefit for bloating as very low. On Amazon 77% of 6,998 ratings are five-star.
Is MAV Prebiotics and Probiotics safe, and does it have side effects?
The Amazon safety text advises talking to a healthcare provider first if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition. Amazon’s summary says customers report no side effects or discomfort, though side effects are a topic in 278 reviews whose direction was not readable. Prebiotic fibers such as inulin and XOS can cause gas in some people; the label’s 1,000 mg is a small amount.
How much does MAV Prebiotics and Probiotics cost?
The 60-capsule bottle is $21.99 on Amazon and the dose is two capsules, so 30 days costs $0.73 a day ($0.66 a day with Subscribe & Save at $19.79). The brand’s own site lists it at $26.39 ($0.88 a day) and showed it sold out when read.
MAV Prebiotics and Probiotics vs Vitalitown 120 billion: what is the difference?
MAV’s label lists 16 species at 50 billion CFU and 1,000 mg of XOS and inulin, two capsules a day at $0.73 a day. Vitalitown’s label lists 36 names at 120 billion CFU, 150 mg of an unnamed prebiotic fiber blend and 20 mg of 13 digestive enzymes, one capsule a day at $0.55 a day. Neither prints strain codes and no trial compares them.
Why do some MAV listings say 20 billion CFU and others 50 billion?
MAV sells at least two formulas under similar names. Target and Vitacost list a 20 billion CFU capsule with two organisms (L. acidophilus and B. bifidum) and 400 mg of XOS, taken one a day, while the brand site and the Amazon label image show 50 billion CFU from 16 species, two capsules a day. Amazon’s ingredient text still reads like the older formula, so check the panel on the bottle you receive.
