Why it might work
LGG is a human-origin strain selected for surviving stomach acid and adhering to the gut lining, where it is thought to compete with unwanted bacteria and support the barrier. It is one of the most studied single strains, with its clearest results in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea and shortening infectious diarrhea. This capsule delivers it at 25 billion CFU, which is above the trial doses, in a plain cellulose capsule with no prebiotic or excipient.
What the research supports
Strain-specific evidence, which is rare. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is the strain in Culturelle: a meta-analysis of 12 randomized trials in 1,499 people found it cut the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and the NIH fact sheet notes it is most effective against infectious diarrhea at 10 billion CFU or more a day. Those trials were not of this capsule, but the strain is licensed from its owner and the capsule contains nothing else, so the evidence applies more directly than for most probiotics.
What the label discloses
One vegetarian capsule supplies Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG at 25 billion CFU; the only other ingredients are the capsule (cellulose and water). Pure Encapsulations states the product is shelf-stable and free from common allergens, and the strain is disclosed with its designation. Whether the count is stated at manufacture or through expiry is not specified on the listing.
Where it may not fit
The label supports vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, no added sweeteners and minimal ingredient list. A capsule only works if you will take it once a day, every day.
Side effects and what to be aware of
It costs about the same per day as Culturelle for a higher count, and for the outcomes where LGG has an evidence-based dose, 10 billion a day is already at or above it, so the extra count buys no proven extra effect. The review pool is small. Live organisms: not for anyone immune-suppressed or seriously ill without advice.
