Which psyllium husk should you buy?

Quick answer

Which psyllium husk should you buy? The plain husk powder gives the most psyllium per serving (7 g of fiber) for the least money (about $0.31 a day) with one ingredient. Metamucil powder is the same fiber at 3.4 g a teaspoon with flavoring, aspartame and Yellow 6, for people who will not drink it unflavored. Capsules hold about 0.52 g each, so five capsules is roughly a third of a powder serving.

Plain psyllium husk powder gives 7 g of fiber a serving with one ingredient; Metamucil powder about 3.4 g of psyllium a teaspoon; Metamucil capsules about 0.52 g each, so five capsules is about 2.6 g.

Every psyllium product on the shelf is the same fiber. What changes between them is how much psyllium you get per serving, what else is in the tub, how it is sold (a supplement label or an over-the-counter laxative label), and what a day costs. Those four things are what this page compares.

Three forms, one fiber

NOW Foods Psyllium Husk Powder7 g of fiber per servingNone. The ingredient list is psyllium husk powder.About $0.31 for one serving

Metamucil’s powder and capsules carry a Drug Facts panel because they are sold as over-the-counter bulk laxatives. The NOW tub carries a Supplement Facts panel. The fiber inside is the same either way; the panel changes what the pack is allowed to say and how the dose is written.

The dose the evidence uses

The trials that show psyllium relieving chronic constipation mostly used more than 10 g of fiber a day for at least four weeks. A 2022 systematic review of 16 randomized trials in 1,251 adults found responders at 66% on fiber against 41% on control, with psyllium among the fibers that reached significance (van der Schoot et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2022). The FDA-authorized cholesterol claim that Metamucil prints on the pack is set at 7 g of soluble fiber from psyllium a day.

What reaching that range takes, product by product:

Starting at that dose is not the idea. The same review measured a clear rise in flatulence on fiber (standardized mean difference 0.80 against control), which is why every label says to begin with one serving and build up over one to two weeks. Our psyllium timeline guide covers what to expect in the first days and the first month.

What to check on the label

Powder or capsules

Choose by which one you will take every day, because the fiber only works while you keep taking it. The powder gives a full dose in one drink and costs least, but it gels within a minute or two of mixing, so it has to be drunk promptly; reviewers of the plain husk say it turns to jelly if left. Capsules avoid the drink and the texture but hold about half a gram each, so a real dose is a lot of capsules and several times the price. The flavored powder sits between the two: a smaller dose per teaspoon than plain husk, a taste most people tolerate, and single-serve packets for travel.

Common questions

Is psyllium husk powder better than Metamucil?

They are the same fiber. Plain husk powder gives 7 g of fiber per serving with one ingredient at about $0.31 a day. Metamucil powder gives about 3.4 g of psyllium per rounded teaspoon with maltodextrin, orange flavor, aspartame and Yellow 6, at about $0.64 a day at the pack’s serving. Metamucil is the one to buy if unflavored psyllium is something you will stop drinking.

How much psyllium should I take a day?

The constipation trials that showed an effect mostly used more than 10 g of fiber a day for at least four weeks, and the FDA cholesterol claim is set at 7 g of soluble fiber from psyllium a day. Start with one serving a day and build up over one to two weeks, because gas is the usual early effect.

Are psyllium capsules as good as the powder?

Same fiber, much smaller dose. A Metamucil capsule holds about 0.52 g of psyllium husk, so a five-capsule serving is about 2.6 g against 7 g of fiber in one serving of plain powder. Reaching a trial-sized dose takes about twenty capsules a day, at roughly four times the cost of the powder.

Whole psyllium husks or psyllium powder?

The same fiber in a coarser or finer grind. Powder disperses faster and gels within a minute or two, so it has to be drunk promptly; whole husks thicken more slowly. Choose whichever you will actually take every day, because the benefit only lasts while you keep taking it.

Does psyllium have to be taken with water?

Yes, a full glass every time. The Drug Facts panel on Metamucil products warns that taking psyllium without enough liquid may cause choking, and that people with difficulty swallowing should not take it. The same applies to plain husk powder. Take it at least two hours away from medicines.
