Comparison

Align vs Culturelle: which one should you take?

Culturelle vs Align, or Align vs Culturelle: these two look almost identical on the shelf — a single-strain, once-a-day probiotic capsule from a brand your pharmacist has heard of. The difference is what each strain has been tested on, and the fact that one costs 2.3× more per day than the other.

Align’s strain, B. longum 35624, has its best evidence in IBS symptom severity, from a 30-day trial in 233 adults. Culturelle’s strain, L. rhamnosus GG, has its best evidence in antibiotic-associated diarrhea, from 12 trials in 1,499 people.

The short answer

Start here for most people

Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic

$0.75 a day · 4.7★ from 3,383 ratings at iHerb

It is less than half the price, has roughly 10 times as many customer ratings behind it, and the label is cleaner — vegan, dairy-free, and short enough to read in one breath.

  • You want a sensible daily probiotic without overthinking it
  • You are about to take, or just took, a course of antibiotics
  • You are traveling
  • You avoid dairy
Worth the extra if

Align Probiotic Extra Strength

$1.69 a day · 4.7★ from 334 ratings at Walmart

Its strain has the single strongest IBS-specific trial result of any probiotic we have looked at. If that is your actual problem, the premium buys you evidence aimed at it rather than evidence aimed at something else.

  • Your symptoms follow an IBS pattern: bloating, gas, cramping pain, unpredictable bowels
  • You have already tried a general probiotic and got nothing
  • You care more about strain-specific evidence than price

Not sure which of the two fits you? The quiz asks about your symptoms before it names one.

The caveat. Neither of these is a fix for a problem that is not bacterial. A probiotic will not do much for lactose intolerance, a fiber shortfall, or reflux — and plenty of people arrive at this page when what they need is a different category of product entirely.

Where they differ

1. Price, and it is not close

Culturelle works out at about $22.50 a month against $50.70 for Align. Over a year that is a difference of about $343.10. For a category where you are supposed to give a product four to eight weeks before judging it, the cheaper one is a much less painful experiment.

2. The evidence points at different problems

Align

One of the strongest strain-specific results in this catalog. The FLORAVIE trial gave Bifidobacterium longum 35624 (Bifantis) to 233 evaluable adults with IBS for 30 days and cut the IBS Symptom Severity Score from 303 to 208 (p<0.001), with 65.7% seeing a drop of more than 50 points. This label states the same organism at 4 mg per capsule.

Culturelle

One of the best-studied strains sold as a supplement. A meta-analysis of 12 randomized trials in 1,499 people found L. rhamnosus GG cut antibiotic-associated diarrhea from 22.4% to 12.3%, with separate evidence for acute diarrhea. This label states the same strain at 10 billion CFU. Note that a different Culturelle product (IBS Complete Support) was previously asked by NAD to drop certain claims — that finding does not concern this Digestive Daily formula.

Both strains are well studied, but they are well studied on different things. If your problem is IBS-pattern discomfort, Align’s trial is measuring the thing you care about. If your problem is a course of antibiotics wrecking your gut, Culturelle’s is.

3. How much customer evidence exists

Culturelle carries 3,383 ratings against Align’s 334. Both average 4.7★, but those two numbers do not deserve equal confidence: an average over three thousand people tells you far more about what to expect than an average over three hundred.

4. What's in the capsule

Align

The organism is disclosed at strain level with a milligram amount and a stated live count at manufacture, which is more transparent than most probiotics here. It is not dairy-free — it contains milk via sodium caseinate — and no third-party testing certificate is published.

Culturelle

LGG is disclosed at strain level with its CFU count, and the ingredient list is short — the strain plus inulin. It is vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free, and non-GMO, though no CFU-through-expiry guarantee or third-party testing certificate is stated.

What customers say

Align

Praised for

  • bloating and stomach discomfort easing within the first month
  • being the gastroenterologist-recommended brand for over a decade running
  • a simple once-a-day capsule that fits into an existing routine

Complaints

A meaningful minority say it made bloating or stomach issues worse rather than better, and some call it expensive for a month's supply. The label itself says not to use if pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, or immune-suppressed. Note: the ratings above are read from a 42-capsule Walmart listing; the linked buy page is a 21-capsule pack of the same product.

Culturelle

Praised for

  • noticeably less gas and bloating within a couple of weeks
  • being a brand pharmacists and physicians commonly recommend
  • staying steady through a course of antibiotics or travel

Complaints

Some say it caused new stomach upset or gassiness rather than fixing it, and a few feel it is pricier than it needs to be for a single-strain formula.

Where they are the same

Different products from the same two brands

These are not the products compared above and we do not recommend them in place of them — a gummy carries less of the strain than the capsule, and the Culturelle below is a higher-dose version of the one in the table. Treat them as options rather than advice.

Common questions

Align vs Culturelle for IBS: which is better?

Align. Its strain, Bifidobacterium longum 35624, has a 30-day trial in 233 adults with IBS in which the symptom severity score fell from 303 to 208. Culturelle’s strain, L. rhamnosus GG, has its strongest evidence for antibiotic-associated diarrhea, not IBS. If IBS is the actual problem, the premium buys evidence aimed at it.

Which is better, Culturelle or Align?

They are studied on different problems. Align’s strain, Bifidobacterium longum 35624, has the IBS evidence: in a 30-day open-label study of 233 evaluable adults, the IBS Symptom Severity Score fell from 303 to 208. Culturelle’s strain, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, has the antibiotic evidence: across 12 randomized trials in 1,499 people it cut antibiotic-associated diarrhea from 22.4% to 12.3%. Culturelle costs less than half as much a day.

Is Align good for IBS?

Its strain has the most IBS-specific result of the two: a 30-day open-label, multicenter study of 233 evaluable adults with IBS taking one capsule a day cut the IBS Symptom Severity Score from 303 to 208. That study had no placebo group, and a 2026 strain-specific review of randomized placebo-controlled trials still lists B. longum 35624 among the five strains with efficacy in IBS.

Is Culturelle good for IBS?

Its evidence is mainly for antibiotic-associated diarrhea, not IBS. The same 2026 strain-specific review does list Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG among the five strains with randomized placebo-controlled evidence in IBS, so it is not without support, but Align’s strain is the one with the IBS severity result on this page.

Does Culturelle prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea in adults?

The pooled result across 12 trials (22.4% down to 12.3%) was driven by the trials in children. In adults the reduction was not statistically significant overall; it was significant in the four trials of people on H. pylori treatment. Taking it alongside antibiotics is the best-supported use, with that limit in mind.

What are the side effects of Align?

Among customer reviews, a meaningful minority say it made bloating or stomach upset worse rather than better. The label itself says not to use it if pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive or immune-suppressed, and it contains milk via sodium caseinate.

Can you take Align and Culturelle together?

Nothing on either label rules it out, and the strains are different organisms, but no trial has tested the combination. Given the gap in price, the usual approach is to pick the strain whose evidence matches the problem and give it four to eight weeks before judging it.

In one line: Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic — start here for most people.

Speak to a doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, immune-suppressed, or taking prescription medication — and before starting anything if you have blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or pain severe enough to wake you at night. Those are signs to get looked at, not to try a supplement.

Not sure either of these is your problem?

Most people who land on a page like this have already guessed at the category. Our quiz asks what you are experiencing and tells you whether a probiotic is even the right answer — it might be an enzyme, a fiber, or something else.
