Comparison

Align vs Seed DS-01: one strain with a trial record, or 24 strains with one trial

These two get compared because they are the probiotics people have heard of. They are built on opposite ideas. Align is a single strain, Bifidobacterium longum 35624, chosen because it has been tested in IBS for twenty years. Seed DS-01 is a 24-strain synbiotic whose case rests on one recent trial of the finished capsule. Which is better depends on what you are treating.

Align is one strain, B. longum 35624, tested in IBS: a 30-day study in 233 adults cut IBS severity by about a third. Seed DS-01 is 24 strains, tested in bloating: one six-week trial of the finished capsule in 350 adults.

Quick answer

Align for IBS-type symptoms — pain or discomfort with a bowel habit that has changed. Its strain has two decades of trials, including a 30-day study in 233 adults that cut IBS severity by roughly a third.

Seed DS-01 for chronic bloating on its own, if $2 a day is acceptable. Its one trial recruited 350 adults for bloating and measured bloating, gas and discomfort against placebo. It is company-funded and not yet repeated, but it is a trial of the actual capsule, which almost no probiotic can say.

The short answer

For IBS-type symptoms

Align Probiotic Extra Strength

$1.69 a day · 4.7★ from 334 ratings at Walmart

One strain, B. longum 35624, disclosed at strain level with a milligram amount. The FLORAVIE trial gave it to 233 adults with IBS for 30 days and cut the IBS Symptom Severity Score from 303 to 208, with 65.7% improving by more than 50 points. A 2006 trial in 362 women found the 100-million-CFU dose beat placebo while a dose 100 times higher did not, which is why Align’s modest count is not a weakness.

Seed DS-01 Daily Synbiotic

$2.00 a day · 4★ from 1,012 ratings at Amazon

24 named strains at 53.6 billion AFU plus a 400 mg polyphenol prebiotic, in a capsule-in-capsule shell. A company-funded randomized trial gave it to 350 adults with chronic bloating and indigestion for six weeks and found bloating, gas and abdominal-discomfort scores improved against placebo. 131 of the 350 had dropped out by week six, and it has not been independently repeated.

  • Bloating is the whole complaint and nothing has a clear trigger
  • You need dairy-free or vegan
  • The price is not the deciding factor

Not sure which of the two fits you? The quiz asks about your symptoms before it names one.

What neither trial shows. Both were self-reported symptom trials with placebo groups that also improved, which is normal for gut symptoms. Neither compared the two products with each other, and neither tested them in people whose bloating follows specific foods; for that, an enzyme matched to the food is usually the better first step. Where they differ

1. One strain against twenty-four

Align’s whole argument is the strain. B. longum 35624 has been tested in IBS since the mid-2000s, and its evidence transfers to the capsule because the capsule is the strain and nothing else. Seed’s argument is the opposite: a broad formula tested as a whole. That is a legitimate design, but it means the 24 individual strains carry no evidence of their own at these doses, and if the formula changes, the trial no longer applies.

2. What each trial measured

FLORAVIE measured IBS severity in people with a diagnosis. Seed’s trial measured bloating, gas and discomfort in people who signed up online for chronic bloating, without a clinician confirming what they had. If your problem is IBS, Align’s evidence is the closer fit; if it is bloating without a diagnosis, Seed’s is. Neither trial tested the other product’s population.

3. Dose, and why bigger is not the point

Seed states 53.6 billion active units; Align Extra Strength states a far smaller count. That is not the advantage it looks like. The one trial to test three doses of Align’s strain found 100 million CFU beat placebo and 10 billion did not, and a 2017 review of dose-response data found no dose-response for IBS symptoms at all. Count matters for a short list of outcomes; IBS-type symptoms are not on it. See how many CFU do you need?

4. Allergens and diet

Align contains milk through sodium caseinate. Seed is stated free of the nine major allergens and is vegan. For anyone avoiding dairy, that settles it.

5. Cost

Align is about $1.69 a day; Seed is $2.00 on Amazon and about $1.67 on subscription. Over a year that is roughly $620 against $610–730. Neither is cheap; Culturelle, with a better-documented strain for a different problem, is $0.75.

Common questions

Is Seed DS-01 better than Align?

Neither is better in general. Align’s strain has the longer record in IBS: a 30-day trial in 233 adults cut the IBS Symptom Severity Score from 303 to 208. Seed’s evidence is one company-funded six-week trial in 350 adults with chronic bloating, which improved bloating, gas and discomfort against placebo. For IBS-type pain with a disturbed bowel habit, Align has the evidence; for chronic bloating without a diagnosis, Seed’s trial is the closer match, at a higher daily cost.

Which is better for bloating, Align or Seed?

Seed’s trial recruited people for bloating specifically and measured it; Align’s trials measured overall IBS severity, of which bloating is one part, and its strain ranked second for bloating in a 2022 network meta-analysis of IBS probiotics. If bloating is the whole complaint and the budget stretches to $2 a day, Seed has the more direct evidence. If it comes with pain and irregular bowels, Align.

Can I take Align and Seed together?

There is no trial of the combination and no reason from the evidence to expect more from both than from one. Pick the one that matches your symptoms, give it four to six weeks, and switch if nothing changes.

Does Align contain dairy?

Yes. Align contains milk through sodium caseinate, so it is not suitable for a milk allergy. Seed DS-01 states that it is free of the nine major allergens and is vegan.

How much do Align and Seed cost per day?

Align Extra Strength is about $1.69 a day at the price we read; Seed DS-01 is $2.00 a day on Amazon and about $1.67 on the brand’s own subscription.

In one line: Align Probiotic Extra Strength — for IBS-type symptoms.

Speak to a doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, immune-suppressed, or taking prescription medication — and before starting anything if you have blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or pain severe enough to wake you at night. Those are signs to get looked at, not to try a supplement.

Not sure a probiotic is the right category?

Bloating after particular foods often points to an enzyme rather than a probiotic, and constipation points to fiber. Our quiz asks before it names anything.
